Back Pain: Treat the Cause, Not Just the Symptoms

Back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions affecting people of all ages, from office workers and athletes to older adults. Although many episodes of back pain improve with rest, recurring or persistent symptoms may indicate an underlying condition that requires professional assessment and appropriate rehabilitation.

Back pain can result from many different causes, including muscle strain, poor posture, prolonged sitting, improper lifting techniques, reduced physical activity, spinal joint dysfunction, degenerative disc disease, or lumbar disc herniation. Some individuals also experience pain radiating into the buttock or leg, accompanied by numbness or weakness, which may suggest nerve involvement and should be evaluated promptly.

Physical therapy begins with a comprehensive assessment of spinal mobility, posture, muscle strength, flexibility, movement patterns, and neurological function. Since every patient's condition is unique, treatment plans are individualized to address the specific factors contributing to pain rather than focusing solely on symptom relief.

Treatment may include manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, therapeutic exercises, core stabilization training, movement retraining, and education on proper body mechanics during sitting, lifting, standing, and daily activities. Correcting these contributing factors helps reduce stress on the spine and lowers the risk of future episodes.

Most cases of back pain respond well to conservative management when treated early. If pain persists for several weeks, radiates into the leg, or is associated with numbness or muscle weakness, early evaluation by a physical therapist or physician is recommended. Timely rehabilitation can improve recovery, prevent chronic pain, and help individuals return safely to work, exercise, and everyday life.
